Training [ edit ]

They each start out in the same place – dental school. But once they have graduated from an accredited dental school, their paths differ. After dental school, a general dentist can go on to begin practicing dentistry. However, an orthodontist continues their education in a specialty orthodontics program that typically lasts two to three years. During this time , an orthodontist not only learns in a classroom, but also gets hands on training to learning the intricacies behind moving teeth and aligning jaws.

Orthodontic treatment and braces
I would highly recommend dr michael ryan’s ortho dont ic practice, which was recommended to me by a colleague. After exploring a few options i decided to go with dr ryan as his orthodontic approach to my particular issue suited me. Also his quote was the most favourable. Dr ryan and his team are very professional and efficient. They are warm and friendly, and provided me with advice and support pre, during and post my treatment with braces. Dr ryan is an expert at his profession and has many years experience under his belt, this being evident in the precision and skill applied during my treatment.
The aao states that orthodontists specialize in aligning the jaws and moving the teeth. What this means in practice is that orthodontists offer treatments to correct crowded teeth, gaps between teeth, teeth that stick out and jaws that don't align properly. Orthodontists have many tools at their disposal to help them move the teeth and jaws into proper alignment, including traditional braces , lingual braces and clear aligners, among other orthodontic appliances. Because alignment problems are unique to each patient, orthodontists use x-rays and photographs of the teeth to create individualized treatment plans, notes the aao.
The cost of braces can vary significantly from patient to patient. The location of the practice matters, of course, but you will also need to consider other factors, such as what type of corrections are needed and how long they’re expected to take. We’ll always give you an estimate at the beginning of your orthodontic treatment so that you have a basic idea of what you can ultimately expect to pay. Remember that insurance can help you reduce the amount you pay out of pocket; our team can handle all of the necessary paperwork so that you receive the benefits that you’re entitled to.

The best age to have braces
Very honest and sensible orthodontist for my son. He saw him twice when my son was age 8 and recently age 13, both times for 2nd opinion as we are not local, after 1st orthodontist was suggesting unnecessary braces. I like dr houlihan’s approach, he did not try to push anything but helped me to make the difference between what is necessary and what is purely aesthetic, and based on that allowed me to make an informed decision. Both times he listened to us and advised me as if the child was his own. Last time i went i only paid for the x-ray.
Orthodontists review their patient’s dental records along with their photos and x-rays in order to design a treatment plan. They use devices such as braces and retainers to change the placement of their client’s teeth. Depending on the patient’s diagnosis, an orthodontist can greatly impact someone’s quality of life by realigning their teeth. This can improve a person’s ability to eat and improve their smile. They may work with patients of all ages, from children to adults. Some patients may find visiting the dentist intimidating or even scary, so orthodontists should be patient, relatable, and compassionate so their patients have a good experience.
