Before: Ready to Remodel

start
ing over,” machado recalls.
“but i saw the potential of what this space could be because it was already an ideal layout. ” they discussed painting the walls and cabinets and replacing the countertops, backsplash, and flooring. However, it became apparent that replacing all the cabinets and drawer fronts was inevitable. The kitchen update included quartzite countertops. They also brightened up the walls and made the island a focal point by painting it a moody blue, which was a color chosen to match the decorative backsplash tile.

Paul and pauline own sussex prairie gardens , an eight-acre public garden in west sussex. The grounds included a rusty haymaker’s barn, which has been transformed into a modern and functional home by sandy rendel architects. It’s enveloped in weatherproof, corrugated zinc and sits next to a newly built mock grain silo that functions as a viewing tower, offering visitors a bird’s-eye view of the gardens. The ground floor has two guest bedrooms, a bathroom, main bedroom and office. The first floor offers a large open-plan kitchen and living area, with a private walkway to the viewing tower. The exterior remains true to its origins, while the interior features modern updates that gently echo the character of the barn, such as precision-engineered red trusses to support the insulated curved roof, oak flooring and stainless steel counters in the kitchen.
Before: Room for Improvement
At first glance, this living room already looked pretty up to date, and it wasn't too cluttered, but there's always room for improvement. Swapping out the old seating pieces in four different colors for sofas and armchairs in only two gives the space a more cohesive look. Next, the old coffee table is traded for a more stylish option. Finally, the addition of the rug ties everything together in a way that was missing from the old room.

The kitchen before didn’t work for us. Not only did the colour give me nightmares, but as you might have seen from my living room reveal post ( here ), it was separated from the living room and felt isolated at the back of the house. It’s a north-facing room, so felt dark and dingy, especially with the wooden units and heavy, black tiles. Practically it didn’t work either, we kept banging our heads on the extractor fan, doors were falling off, the freezer didn’t work, and the fridge was in one of those small base units with hardly any space to store food for two people.
It’s amazing how updating flooring can really transform a room. From the warmth of engineered wood to punchy patterned vinyl, researching flooring as part of a kitchen remodel is worth doing.
